Wednesday 27 at Java Café, the regular (now quarterly) Open Stage event for local and visiting writers from 7.30 pm. Nope, it’s on Wednesday 3 February.  Readers this month are Australian performance poet Myley Rattle, Phina So from PEN Cambodia, and musician/writer/artist Conrad Keely. Works will be on sale at the venue.

On Thursday 28 from 6.30 pm the French Institute presents Adorned body, transformed body, the work of Cambodian photographers Khun Vannak and Sun Vanndy, featuring explorations of body transformations through tattoos, scarification, make-up.  A tattoo booth will be available for temporary tattoos.

On Saturday 30 and Sunday 31Lotus Centre in Ta Khmau is running a Moving Voice Intensive workshop. Activities, led by facilitators in dance, voice, theatre and movement, will include voice and movement explorations, vocal improvisation, contact improvisation and body music, singing, moving, stillness, and meditation, in English, Khmer and French. No experience required.

On Saturday 30 at Meta House at 6 pm, the opening of IN/VISIBLE, an exhibition by French/German photographer Ann-Christine Woehrl, as part of a long-term project on women who have been attacked by flame or acid burns or who have tried to commit suicide out of threat in Bangladesh, Nepal, Cambodia, Pakistan, Uganda and India. Woehrl will give an artists talk at 8 pm, along with screenings of films about acid victims in Cambodia and other countries.

The recently opened bar Cloud (St 9, near end of St 308) is holding a street art workshop on Sunday 31 from 10 am through to 5 pm. Renowned street artist from Guatemala, Erick Vendetta, will pass on some tips. $20 per person, includes equipment. Special prices for Cambodian students.

Tonight, Tuesday 19 at 7 pm at Meta House, The Mekong Review and Monument Books present the launch of Deathpower: Buddhism’s Ritual Imagination in Cambodia, by Erik W Davis, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The book, the result of three years of intensive field research, explores Buddhist rituals of death in contemporary Cambodia.

On Wednesday 20, the opening at the Lotus Pond Art Gallery at The Plantation of Vincent Broustet’s new exhibition ROAM!, a collection of 15 charcoal drawings on craft paper, depicting the impromptu parties held by moonlight in the Cambodian countryside, near Kampot. 6.30 pm start.

Tompeang Snong Russey (Bamboo Shoots) features six dance pieces, “with the intention of developing creativity among a generation of highly accomplished performers and stimulating cultural vibrancy.” The performance commences as 7 pm at the Khmer Arts Theatre, #135, Street 115 (about 300 metres from National Road 2) in Takdol Village, Takhmao (see the map). $2.50 on the door.

Downstairs, From Ruin To Riches Cambodia’s Economy (1975 – 2015) is a multi-media collaborative exhibition by students from eight Phnom Penh universities, photographers, artists and filmmakers looking at the rapid pace of development in Cambodia over the last 40 years. At the same time upstairs, the opening of a painting exhibition by Chheang Rena, The Standing Subble, a collection of six architectural paintings, “to explore the richness of Cambodia’s civilization before it collapsed.”  Both events kick off at 6 pm.

Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 1 December, 2015

Tonight, Tuesday 1 at 6 pm, a FAM (film, art and music) night, at Mito Hotel (formerly Mittaheap Hotel, Monivong Blvd, near Wat Koh, south of Psar Thmei). Sense will showcase short films from the Cambodian Film Exchange Programme, in collaboration with Project Accessible Hollywood, and also feature musical projects. An interactive live painting constructed on October 28 at Mito Hotel will be auctioned off at 8 pm.

Grey. “The works are pen and ink, water color, and collage using old “found” photographs. The Phnom Penh Writers Workshop is a regular gathering of Phnom Penh writers who are interested in discussion and critique of their works in progress. The next workshop will be held Sunday 29– if you would like to be involved, please contact Carly Nugent (cnfrizzle [at] gmail.com).

Just launched, a special appeal by Java Arts, raising money for artists hit by last month’s fire at the rear of the café.   The work of eight artists: Anida Yoeu Ali, Chath PierSath, Genevieve Marot, Neak Sophal, Nicolas C Grey, Oeur Sokuntevy, Qudy Xu-Min and William Graef are valued at $20,000 and accounts for about 10% of the available works on the art market in Cambodia.”  The Java Arts Fire Relief Fund is being run through Indiegogo.

At the same time, Amrita Performing Arts looks to the future with Next Steps, and asks for assistance in the establishment of a residency for young Khmer choreographers. Check out the Indiegogo pitch for this exciting new project.

The Cambodian festival season continues next week with the Cambodian International Film Festival in Phnom Penh from Friday 4 December  through to Thursday 10, crossing over with the Angkor Photo Festival Saturday 5 December though to Saturday 12.
