Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 27 June, 2017

Greetings,

Tonight, Tuesday 27, at Meta House from 6 pm, the opening of an exhibition by Berlin-based painter Ernst Altmann, Evergreen Apparel, a new series of drawings and gouaches reflecting on Cambodian garment workers and the social imbalances he witnesses. “Can one paint Cambodian female factory workers in their grace and dignity when their living conditions are so tough that the only reasonable reaction would be anger? How can we show our solidarity?”

On Wednesday 28, 6.30 pm at Java Independence, painter Oeur Sokuntevy’s triumphant return to Phnom Penh with the exhibition Upside Down, new paintings produced since moving to Berlin. “Unlike her previous work, this series has more similarities to documentation than storytelling. There is a distance from the subjects that has allowed Sokuntevy, with her observant-eye, to define moments through colour and movement – an intuitive narrative that is felt rather than known.”  Also join her for an artist talk on Thursday 29 at 6.30 pm.
