For the western holiday season, Our Books presents a collection of illustrations from its previous years of activity at Rik Reay Noodle Shop / Gallery (St 178 near St 19) through the end of the year, commencing Wednesday 18 and continuing through to Monday 28. Wednesday 18 at 6 pm, Sa Sa Art Projects, at The White Building [map] is presenting a special evening of works by artists in residence Sok Chanrado and Blu Simon Wasem. Sound Wave: Documentation of a Performance, by Sok Chanrado, is a mixed media installation incorporating sound and vox pop; Daily Life Simulacrum, by Blu Simon Wasem, is a combination of White Building collaborations including live performance. More experimental collaborative arts at Bophana Center (St 200, between Monivong and St 63) on Friday 20 at 7 pm with Space Within, a performance curated by Khiang Hei. A range of performers including musicians, dancers and visual artists, with audience participation as well. Arts+Society is holding a public discussion and debate at Botanic Art Café on Saturday 21 at 2 pm on the topic Do Foreigners Hurt Arts?, in response to a recent Phnom Penh Post article which has encouraged at least one response. Hosted by Khiang Hei with US art academic Phally Chroy. On Saturday 21 at 4pm at Bophana Center, the regular Cine Saturday features three Cambodian Living Arts documentaries showcasing endangered forms of Cambodian music : Smot (poetry chanting), Classical Wedding Music (from Angkorian times) and Kong Skor (funeral music from Angkorian times). I have just today stumbled across a group called Spoken Arts Siem Reap. According to their Facebook page, it’s for “anyone who loves to perform – or listen to – spoken word, monologues, short narratives or any other form of lyrical expression.” Fortnightly Spoken Arts nights are held at Party House on Sok San Road, every other Tuesday from 8.30 pm. And the page also assures me it’s on tonight. And those literary minded who are shuttling from the north to the south this week would get an opportunity to back-to-back at the monthly Java Open Stage: Poetry open mic on Thursday 12 at 7 pm. This month the presentation will be preceded by a writers meet-up at 6 pm, an attempt to nurture a cross-language literature community in Phnom Penh. Readings and discussions and more! Recent months have seen the growing involvement of young Khmer writers along side the English and French. Downstairs at Java Café and Gallery, Sihanouk Blvd, Phnom Penh.
All across town, the fourth annual Cambodian International Film Festival continues until Thursday 12, with free screenings at l’Institute Francais, Bophana Center, Legend, Platinum and Diamond Island. On Friday 6 at 6 pm, at Meta House, the opening of a multi-disciplinary exhibition, Spaces of remembrance and views of souvenirs, using drawing, painting, installation and video. The project is a collaboration between Cambodian artist Chan Nawath and Germans Anja Bodanowitz and Janna Rehbein. The research by the artists was organized in cooperation with the local Memory Culture Committees of the districts and the NGO Youth for Peace.
