On Sunday 30 Meta House hosts the opening of Mythology of Form, an exhibition of pieces by German painter and Phnom Penh resident Clement Jesch. “Mythology of form” is the combined theme of these six pieces since the term mythology as associated with content is turned around to the sheer means of formal delivery and referential to where as story it can not be found but has to be re-created with the inclusion of some figuration (logos arcade for example) to a meaning at a far remove, without interpretation if possible, non-local, referentially open and as universal as possible.” 6 pm – 10 pm.

Bophana Center hosts a photographic exhibition by Jessica Austin, Fulbright Scholar 2016/17, Spectral Memories of the Screen: the After-Life of Cambodia’s Heritage Cinemas. “Photos taken inside old cinemas in Kampong Cham, Battambang, Kampot, and Kratie invite the viewer to enter these public spaces that have had many lives and now exist between memory and obliteration.”

At Java Independence, painter Oeur Sokuntevy’s triumphant return to Phnom Penh with the exhibition Upside Down, new paintings produced since moving to Berlin. “Unlike her previous work, this series has more similarities to documentation than storytelling. There is a distance from the subjects that has allowed Sokuntevy, with her observant-eye, to define moments through colour and movement – an intuitive narrative that is felt rather than known.”

At the French Institute, Kbach Roam (Dance Pattern), an exhibition of historic photographs documenting the postures and poses of the Cambodian Royal Ballet, by George Groslier, long time director of the National Museum of Phnom Penh.
