Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 18 December, 2018

On Wednesday 19, 6 pm at Sa Sa Art Projects, the opening of Immerse: Contemporary Art Class Graduate Exhibition featuring works by Chhun Kimly, Khiev Kanel, Kong Dara, Kong Siden, Lok Chanmakara, Mok Sombo, Prak Dalin, (Kwan) So Sothsovankong and Sou Sophy. ”The exhibition is a culmination of a six-month program through which the participants immersed themselves in classroom lectures and discussions, site and studio visits, and development of new works. Coming from diverse educational backgrounds and professional fields, the nine participants produce new works employing various media from photography and video, to sculpture, to installation and calligraffiti. They explore and question a range of topics including environment, history, power structure and social hierarchy, gender and religion, social injustice, and forms of control in contemporary societies.” Until 3 January.

Poems, novels, blog posts, emails, whatever you’re working on, bring it. If you don’t want to share your writing, that’s alright! This is just some time focused on writing, and you can come for part of it or all of it.” 6 – 8 pm

On Thursday 20, from 6 pm at Meta House the opening of a photographic exhibition, Contemporary Breath, by Mech Sereyrath, a senior student at the Department of Media and Communication at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. “Her work deals with air pollution in Cambodia, from the burning of fuels such as petroleum, diesel and coal in the transport, household, industrial and energy sectors to smoking cigarettes at home. Air pollution is killing millions of people around the world every year, with nine out of 10 people breathing air containing high levels of pollutants.” From 8 pm environmental films by Cambodian students will be screened.

She enjoys challenging herself artistically in order to find new ways to escape and express her reality. When she can’t use words, she paints.”

Stories of Reality, a photographic exhibition by Caroline Chevalier and le Studio Images, at the French Institute.   “Caroline Chevalier transforms reality into movie sets telling enigmatic stories. A theater in which reality takes on many forms, this exhibition, created in collaboration with the students of Le Studio Images, will take the wanderer into a world of dreams and mystery. The exhibit will also showcase a sound creation by David Laurent, founder of Ateliers de L’Image et du Son in Marseilles, France.”

Morrison creates this from charred lotus petals distilled with Battambang rainwater.”  Until January 6.
