Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 19 September 2023

Drop Cloth … a few things you might not know about

David Richards, a prolific watercolor artist and muralist painter from the USA, who has lived in Southeast Asia for about 20 years. Tonight at Meta House is the opening of his exhibition Keep The Vibe Alive, documenting Phnom Penh’s expat music scene, showcasing popular musicians and venues.  The evening will include performances by Major/Minor and Green Leaf Motif.  The show runs until 15 October.

An artist or an aspect of the arts that you think is overrated:
Art is so subjective.  There is some art that I don’t respond to or like or identify with, but I try to keep an open mind about all of it.  Everybody has their own style and their own interpretation.

An artist of an aspect of the arts that you think is underrated:
I think usually an artist becomes known or respected or admired eventually, if they get enough exposure.

An early art memory:
I come from a whole family of artists – my mother, my sister, my uncle, my aunt, several cousins.  My mother took me to art museums in New Orleans from the age of three and once she saw that I responded to it she kept encouraging me – until I was college age and she tried to discourage me: I don’t want you to be one of those starving artists.  I said I don’t want to study business, I want to study art.

The last thing you had to eat:
A bowl of cereal.

Where did you get your start as an artist?
I studied art in college, but I’ve always made a living doing other things.  Landscaping and gardening in California, bartender in Maui.  When I moved to Asia I started teaching, now I’ve been teaching for 20 years.  I’ve always made a point of not depending on my art for a living to take the pressure off – I can pay the bills and still have free time to paint and draw, whatever job I was doing I was still building my art.  Selling paintings is great when it happens but I don’t rely on it.

When did you first come to Cambodia?
1995.  It was a golden era.  That time, ten years later, twenty years later – it’s still an amazing place whenever you come, and if you never experienced those other years it doesn’t matter.  You go forward with whatever happens right now.

A book or movie you keep going back to:
River of Time, by Jonathan Swain, that The Killing Fields was based on.    I’ve read it probably five or six times – you get a different perspective every time based on your experiences.  I also have a ton of art books that I go back to all the time.
There’s a whole slew of movies that I revisit from time to time, and a lot of directors that I follow, Spike Lee, Scorsese, Tarrantino, Soderbergh.

What languages do you speak?
Besides English, I’m close to being fleunt in Spanish and I’m pretty good at Japanese.  A little bit of Italian, Khmer, Vietnamese, Thai.

A country that you would like to visit:
Italy, every part of Africa, Spain, all of South America.  I’ve been to a lot of countries but I haven’t been to Europe at all.  Cuba, Scandinavia – a lot of places.

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
I’m a very accomplished horserider and trainer.  I’ve been riding since I was five.  I can tame any horse for anybody to ride, no matter how wild or reckless.

A question from the last participant – I am about to inject you with truth serum, what is the question you don’t want me to ask you?
You could ask me anything – I don’t have an aversion to answering anything.

Kumnooh was originally established in May 2013 as a sister publication to LengPleng.com, the online music magazine for Cambodia, to provide basically a gig guide for the wider arts, covering art galleries, literature, dance, cinema, photography and now comedy.

You may be interested in becoming a Friend of Kumnooh, where we ask venues, artists and individuals to show their support by making a small monetary contribution to keep the lights on. In return for a boost in promotion, including a non-Facebook web page on our site for direct contact with the dedicated arts audience.  Check out our first example – Chhan Dina Gallery.  Queries by return email – fabianhipp@kumnooh.com.

For a more rock’n’roll view of Phnom Penh and the wider Cambodian music scene, please check out our sister publication lengpleng.com, the long running live music gig guide.

Send a ‘subscribe’ email to fabianhipp@kumnooh.com to receive Kumnooh in your inbox every Tuesday lunchtime.
