Kumnooh: arts guide for Cambodia, week commencing 30 June 2015

Tonight, Tuesday 30 at 7 pm, Meta House presents the launch of Vanishing Act, a book by Ryun Patterson and Rick Valenzuela that delves into the life and work of Cambodia’s mystic healers and fortune tellers. An accompanying exhibition includes portraits and anecdotes from the people they met in producing the book. The evening will include an artist talk with the authors.

Cambodian Living Arts has the opportunity to send three emerging Khmer artists to take residency for four weeks at the Vermont Studio Center. These artists will also participate in a nine day immersive program in New York City hosted by CLA in partnership with Triangle Arts Association in Brooklyn. The residency dates are August 30 – October 4, 2015. Deadline for applications is Thursday 18. Residency Project Coordinator Anida Yoeu Ali will be in the CLA offices 2 pm to 5 pm Wednesday 17 to assist individual applicants on their applications or to answer any questions. The exhibition is in the hall of the language centre; the talk will be held in the cinema.

Opening tonight Tuesday 26 at MetaHouse at 6 pm, a poster exhibition Creativity In The Cities that depicts creative spaces in east and south east Asia and Europe. “The core objective is to increase awareness that culture and creativity can be considered as key assets of urban development and that creative spaces may serve as a visual spatial symbol to connect art with city space and citizens. […] Nowadays, the value of creative spaces lies not only in economic possibilities, but in their intrinsic value as vehicles for the preservation of (industrial) cultural heritage and promotion of the arts.” From 8 pm a panel of local arts figures will discuss the developments and inspirations for the arts in Phnom Penh.

Commencing on Sunday 17, Meta House presents their annual LGBTI film festival, this year titled I am what I am, as part of the Cambodian Pride celebration. The seven day film programme showcases documentaries, shorts and feature films from Cambodia and abroad.

Just published and now available online is Patrick Samnang Mey’s new graphic novel Captain Cambodia, a fusion of politics, religion and magic rooted in the current issues of today.

Congratulations to Cambodian artist Anida Yoeu Ali, who has won the prestigious Sovereign Asian Art Prize for Spiral Alley, an installation at Java Café in 2012 as part of the artist’s Buddhist Bug collection. The award, that recognises contemporary Asian artists, has been running for 11 years; this is the first win by a Cambodian.

Tonight, Tuesday 28 at 6 pm, Meta House hosts the opening of Anarchy is Dead!, an exhibition of paintings by Gregory Osborn, works arising from manic periods and the artist’s bipolarity. He posits the death of his anarchist beliefs, to be replaced by the new mystery school Entelarchy.

On Wednesday 29, Java Café opens Human Nature, paintings by Oeur Sokuntevy, exploring “the ambiguity between humanity and the natural world through fantastical scenarios.” Starts at 6.30 pm, runs until 7 June.

Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 21 April, 2015

Greetings – post-new year and what a smorgasbord.

Tonight, Tuesday 21, MetaHouse marks the 40th anniversary of the fall of Phnom Penh with an exhibition of photographs taken by French photographer Roland Neveu on April 17, 1975. Only a handful of foreign press remained in Cambodia after the US evacuation operation, and Neveu’s work from that day is a rare photographic glimpse of the Khmer Rouge’s seizure of power. Opening from 6 pm, with a talk by Neveu at 8 pm.

Meanwhile, back in Phnom Penh, on Saturday 25 at 7 pm MetaHouse presents three Cambodian TropFest short film festival winners: Ly Polen’s Colourful knots (2014, 7 min) which was awarded first prize; Somchanrith Chap’s A fistful of pebbles (2014, 7 min) which came third; and Chhin Sothea’s The scavenger (2014, 7 min) that received the Audience Choice Award. Also on the bill are additional Cambodian entries, and winners from last year. The filmmakers will be in attendance and will hold Q&A.

Casting minds back to 2013, Kumnooh readers may recall the WASH collaboration, a Phnom Penh-based blending of poetry, electronic music and visual art. WASH alumni have not been resting – hard on the heels of Invisible Agent Records’ recently releasedAudio Mainline’s EP Soma comes Adrift, a new long playing electronic album by Ebauche, recorded in Cambodia, Ireland and Poland, with artwork by Adriana Snochowska. And when you read “electronic music”… well, it’s probably not what you think: “Lush drones underpin layers of intricate details, a minutiae of sonic touches which rise to the surface and drift away again, moving the listener through the soundscape in an almost hypnotic way.” Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for moreWASH activity in the coming months.
