Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 2 June, 2015

Greetings,

On Wednesday 3 at 6.30 pm, Bophana Center presents Ratanakiri, an exhibition of photographs by Cédric Delannoy, who spent three years in the province working on the Annâdya project, a European Union funded effort to improve food security for ethnic minorities in far north eastern Cambodia.   Cédric will introduce a documentary on the project at 6.30 pm, with cocktail reception to follow.

As part of the exhibition, on Saturday 6 at 4 pm Marine will hold an artists’ talk, Crafting the Sublime to discuss craft, beauty and transforming the everyday into art.

Down in Kampot on Saturday 6 at 8 pm, Ecran Moviehouse presents An Evening With Scott Bywater, a special show combining songs, spoken word poetry and visuals. The show will contain material from the WASH collaboration as well as newer work. Scott is also performing a more straightforward rock’n’roll show full of original compositions at Madi’s House, Kampot, on Friday 5.

Opening tonight Tuesday 26 at MetaHouse at 6 pm, a poster exhibition Creativity In The Cities that depicts creative spaces in east and south east Asia and Europe. “The core objective is to increase awareness that culture and creativity can be considered as key assets of urban development and that creative spaces may serve as a visual spatial symbol to connect art with city space and citizens. […] Nowadays, the value of creative spaces lies not only in economic possibilities, but in their intrinsic value as vehicles for the preservation of (industrial) cultural heritage and promotion of the arts.” From 8 pm a panel of local arts figures will discuss the developments and inspirations for the arts in Phnom Penh.

For four shows, Thursday 21 to Sunday 24, Sophiline Arts Ensemble presents the acclaimed ballet Pamina Devi, by Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, at the Department of Performing Arts Theatre (see number 14 on this map). Originally commissioned for a Mozart festival in Vienna in 2006, this work has been performed in the US and Europe, but was only staged in Cambodia once, back in 2011. Thursday to Saturday at 7 pm, Sunday matinee at 4 pm.

Commencing on Sunday 17, Meta House presents their annual LGBTI film festival, this year titled I am what I am, as part of the Cambodian Pride celebration. The seven day film programme showcases documentaries, shorts and feature films from Cambodia and abroad.

Coming up next week at Java Café: the monthly Open Stage poetry event on Wednesday and a special youth open mic night – Slam, Jam, Thank you Ma’am – a chance for younger performers of music, poetry or theatre to test themselves in front of an audience.

Just published and now available online is Patrick Samnang Mey’s new graphic novel Captain Cambodia, a fusion of politics, religion and magic rooted in the current issues of today.

Congratulations to Cambodian artist Anida Yoeu Ali, who has won the prestigious Sovereign Asian Art Prize for Spiral Alley, an installation at Java Café in 2012 as part of the artist’s Buddhist Bug collection. The award, that recognises contemporary Asian artists, has been running for 11 years; this is the first win by a Cambodian.

Last weekend a new exhibition opened at Sammaki in Battambang. Battambang: Recent Works features works by Srey Bandol, Nov Cheanick, Khchao Touch, Chov Theanly,Hour Seyha, Sou Sophy, and Ben Valentine.

Greetings – post-new year and what a smorgasbord.

Tonight, Tuesday 21, MetaHouse marks the 40th anniversary of the fall of Phnom Penh with an exhibition of photographs taken by French photographer Roland Neveu on April 17, 1975. Only a handful of foreign press remained in Cambodia after the US evacuation operation, and Neveu’s work from that day is a rare photographic glimpse of the Khmer Rouge’s seizure of power. Opening from 6 pm, with a talk by Neveu at 8 pm.

Casting minds back to 2013, Kumnooh readers may recall the WASH collaboration, a Phnom Penh-based blending of poetry, electronic music and visual art. WASH alumni have not been resting – hard on the heels of Invisible Agent Records’ recently releasedAudio Mainline’s EP Soma comes Adrift, a new long playing electronic album by Ebauche, recorded in Cambodia, Ireland and Poland, with artwork by Adriana Snochowska. And when you read “electronic music”… well, it’s probably not what you think: “Lush drones underpin layers of intricate details, a minutiae of sonic touches which rise to the surface and drift away again, moving the listener through the soundscape in an almost hypnotic way.” Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for moreWASH activity in the coming months.

Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 7 April, 2015

Greetings all,

Wednesday 8 sees the launch of the Acts of Memory: Learn the past; Create the future, a programme jointly developed by Bophana Center and Cambodian Living Arts to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1975 fall of Phnom Penh. Activities will commence at 5 pm with a prayer ceremony and smot singing, followed by an official opening with Rithy Panh, CLA Executive Director Phloeun Prim and artist Leang Seckon, and then a lecture by Father François Ponchaud, author of Cambodia: Year Zero. This is Khmer language event. An exhibition, Transmissions 2015, will also be open to the public until the end of May. The Acts of Memory programme will continue throughout the year.

Also on Wednesday 8, Java Café’s monthly Open Stage poetry night features poet and songwriter Scott Bywater, recently returned from France, and comedians Scotty Muldoon, Sam Thomas and Aidan Killian. The night begins, as usual, with the 6 pm writers’ meet-up, followed by featured readers at 7 pm, and an open mic to finish.

On Saturday 11 from 2 pm, Develop Boeng Kak Art are opening the doors at Art Collective House at the Boeng Kak Lake. This is an initiative to create a diversified music and arts space – and the afternoon event will provide an opportunity to share the vision, to begin to gather resources and equipment, and get interested people involved.

Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 31 March, 2015

Opening today, Tuesday 31 – but without an official reception, it appears – at theSofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, is Wonders of 1929, a collection of vintage photographs of Cambodia, the work of Georges Portal, a French actor and director. Looks like quite something for those of us that love those tantalisingly few old black and white photographs of Phnom Penh… and you have four months to find the time to get there.
