On Thursday 31 from 2 pm to 4 pm, Cambodian Living Arts (Sothearos Blvd, just south of St 294) are holding a celebration of their Arn Chorn-Pond Living Arts Scholarships. Scholarship students will share their experience from last year and do a small performance. Open to the public.

On Friday 1 at 6 pm, at Meta House, a joint presentation by the Goethe-Institut and the Institut français du Cambodge: French and German singing cabaret and open stage to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Elysée Treaty. Participation welcomed.

First up in this busy, busy week is Java Café and Gallery’s (56 Sihanouk Blvd ) new exhibition, Distant Geography: words, collages and poetry by Chath pierSath, on Tuesday 22 from 6.30 pm. The exhibition will display a selection of collages, poems and writings, and a “reading room” for the trilogy: Book of Love, Book of Names and Book of Numbers (a work in progress) displaying both reproductions of the books and enlarged images. The public is invited to participate in a collaborative poem by adding words and phrases to a wall to create a temporary collage. The show runs until 24 November, and a reading and Q&A with the artist will be held next month, on Tuesday 12 November.

The Japanese Embassy and the Japan Foundation jointly present the Japan-ASEAN Drums and Voices Concert, to celebrate the Japan-Cambodia 60th Anniversary of Friendship and Japan-ASEAN 40th Anniversary of Friendship and Cooperation. Cambodian traditional drummers Ip Vutha and Buth Channa are performing as Cambodian representatives under the directorship of Michiru Oshima, a well known Japanese movie music composer. On Wednesday 23 Java Café and Gallery is hosting the second in a series of mid-monthly open stage poetry readings. This month there will be a special performance by the Phnom Penh poetry/musical collaboration WASH, in preparation for their album launch early next month, followed by an open poetry reading. Opening on Thursday 24 is Toile et Végétal, a retrospective exhibition of works by Cambodian textile artist Marine Ky, at the Exhibition hall of the Institut français du Cambodge. A bright and colourful show that commences at 7 pm.

Meanwhile, in Battambang, Lotus Bar and Gallery (#52, St 2.5) is finally up and running, and will be holding their first event on Thursday 24 from 7.30 pm. Revolution, a night of experimental music, film and art, will features Pan Gu, a musical collaboration between Norwegian avant garde legend Lasse Marhug and Singaporean musician/ composer Leslie Low, and some Cambodian and international short films.

Pan Gu will also be performed at Meta House in Phnom Penh on Friday 25 from 9 pm.

On Friday evening, Bophana Center and Cambodian Living Arts co-present a special event to celebrate UNESCO’s World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. The activities, being held at Bophana Centre (St 200, between St 6 3 and Monivong) commence at 4 pm with a workshop, Cambodian Music, Now and Then, continuing at 5 pm with the Areak troupe from Kampong Speu, the launch of the Khmer Dance Project with Suppya Nut at 6 pm, and at 7 pm, cocktails and a concert by Khmer rock revival band The Underdogs. Sunday 27 is also the date for the third annual Canon PhotoMarathon at Chaktomuk Theatre, from 7 am to 5 pm, which last year was attended by 600 people. This unusual photography competition has no restriction on age, experience or brand of camera; participants have two hours to take and present photographic work on themes that will be announced at specific points during the day. The Our City Festival 2014 is calling for creatives (designers, architects, performers, filmmakers and visual artists), curators, partners and youth ambassadors for the mid-January event in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Battambang. After the slow and wet weekend of Pchum Ben, another active week as we head towards festival season in November/December/January….

From 6.30 pm on Thursday 10, Romeet Gallery is hosting an exhibition by young photographer Neak Sophal, entitled Sonleuk, work “somewhere between landscape and portraiture.” Sophal’s work has already been exhibited in China, Berlin and key events in and around Cambodia.

Cambodia’s participation in 24 Hour Drawing Day 2013 over the weekend 28/29 September at Java Café turned out to be the best yet, according to organisers Siew Phew Yeung/Our Books, with the participation of professional Cambodian comic artists to tourists and most categories in between. From Thursday 10th, you can view examples of the comics produced at Rik Reay Gallery / Noodle Shop (St 178 near St 19), while the Strip All Night exhibition celebrating the last five years of drawing days continues downstairs at Java Café and Gallery.

This weekend at Java Café and Gallery, the Siew Phew Yeung/Our Books group is coordinating the Cambodian participation in the worldwide 24 hour Comic Day. This is an international event that challenges comic artists to produce a finished 24 page comic in 24 hours – the rest of the world will be doing it next weekend, but thanks to Pchum Ben the Phnom Penh version is brought forward one week. The Cambodian variation on the 24 hour theme, to account for the different lifestyle, is to produce one page in one hour; the event goes on from 8 am on Saturday to 8 am Sunday. A preparatory opening event and exhibition, Strip all Night will take place on Friday evening from 6 – 8 pm.

Kumnooh: Cambodian arts for week commencing 3 September, 2013

Just when we thought low season was gone, another quiet week. But watch out next week: openings at Meta House (Tuesday) and Java (Wednesday), twin events at L’institute français on Thursday, CD launch at Bophana Center on Friday, poetry electronica fusion at Meta House on Saturday, and Drink and Draw on Sunday.

Back to the present, though. Tonight at Meta House you can view a selection of the best South East Asian documentaries from Chopshots 2012, from 7 pm.

Then at Bophana Center on Saturday 7 at 4 pm, Kon Khmer Koun Khmer presents 11 short films made by young Khmer filmmakers, both prizewinners and premieres. The filmmakers will be present for Q&A.

The big event of the week is a special celebration of the 10 year anniversary of innovative dance company Amrita Performing Arts, to be held at Java Cafe and Gallery on Monday 9 from 6.30 pm. Along with an exhibition of images from past productions, founder Fred Frumberg, new Executive Director Kang Rithisal and dancer/choreographer Chumvan Sodachivy will talk about the growth and development through the decade.

Amrita Performing Arts marks its ten year anniversary

Baitong Gallery (#7, St 360, between Norodom and 51), is currently hosting a photographic exhibition by Tim Kelsall, One day in Phnom Penh, documenting the street life the city. The exhibition includes a silent auction in benefit of Friends International.

Swing dancers take note: free refresher courses at Doors (Sts 47 and 84) on Tuesday nights during September in preparation for the official launch of SwingPenh at the end of the month.

Travel blog Ambot-ah recently posted an account of a visit to 1961 Hotel in Siem Reap.

Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 27 August, 2013

Greetings:
The week starts with a bang this very afternoon, Tuesday 27, with the opening of a multimedia exhibition, Finding the Lost Art Forms, at the Cambodian Living Arts gallery, (128-G9 Sothearos Blvd, marking the completion of a year-long CLA project to research and archive the most endangered forms of Cambodian music. The project includes CD releases of Smot poetry chanting, Angkorian era wedding music, Areak music for spirit possession ceremonies, and traditional funeral music, complemented by three documentaries exploring these arts. The exhibition includes information about how the project unfolded, the surprises and discoveries.

The documentaries will be screened this afternoon from 2 pm, with an official opening at 6 pm, followed at 6.40 pm by a 20 minute performance of classical wedding music. The documentaries will continue to be screened through the life of the exhibition, which runs until October 18.

Friday evening from 5.30 pm, Sa Sa Art Projects presents A Child’s Eye View, put together by Children of the White Building, Sothearos Blvd, in collaboration with Aziza School, and Sa Sa Art Project’s artist-in-residence Emma Ota, as part of Sa Sa Art Project’s Pisaot Experimental Arts Residency programme. The children have used animation, photography and mapping to give an inside view of life inside this iconic example of post-colonial architecture.

The event, which will be held in the Sa Sa Art Project space in the White Building itself will include a brief presentation by the participants, a screening of their moving image work, and the distribution of a unique map produced by the children themselves.

This weekend Bophana Centre is continuing its screenings of Rithy Panh’s The Missing Picture, Friday to Sunday, at 6 pm. The Saturday screening is preceded at 4 pm by his 2003 film The People of Angkor.

Also at Bophana, check out their current exhibition, Cambodian Forgotten Songs, marking a new CD production that has trawled through old music scores to arrange, rehearse, perform and record eight songs to recreate several genres of Cambodian music. The exhibition of photographs documents the whole process. The official launch of the CD will be on the last day of the exhibition, on Friday 13 September.

It appears last week was the low season. This week it’s back on, and a great host of exciting events are coming through September… followed of course by festival season as the rains clear. More on these events as we get closer.

Tonight, Tuesday 20 August, Meta House hosts the opening of an exhibition by Iranian
photographer Morteza Ariana called Made on Japan, a critical reflection on the social fabric of Japanese society. The artist will attend the opening, which commences at 6 pm. At 8 pm there will be a screening of TOKYO!, a feature film about life in 21st Century Tokyo.

Also tonight the return of performed poetry in electronic soundscape: a new work, The Next Horizon, created by the WASH collaboration.
