Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 20 August, 2013

Greetings:
It appears last week was the low season. This week it’s back on, and a great host of exciting events are coming through September… followed of course by festival season as the rains clear. More on these events as we get closer.

Tonight, Tuesday 20 August, Meta House hosts the opening of an exhibition by Iranian
photographer Morteza Ariana called Made on Japan, a critical reflection on the social fabric of Japanese society. The artist will attend the opening, which commences at 6 pm. At 8 pm there will be a screening of TOKYO!, a feature film about life in 21st Century Tokyo.

Also tonight the return of performed poetry in electronic soundscape: a new work, The Next Horizon, created by the WASH collaboration. This time they are taking it to the stage at Doors, cnr Sts 47 and 84, as part of Vibe Music Festival, from 8 pm. Look out for a performance at Meta House next month, as well as a downloadable recording of their first work, Triptych.

Thursday 22, Sa Sa Bassac gallery opens a new show, Promotion by Than Sok, a Phnom Penh based artist who works in installations, video and sculpture. The launch will commence at 6 pm.

On Friday 23, Meta House is hosting a Jackson Pollock tribute night, with cinema, blues, jazz and poetry, including the screening of a Pollock documentary at 7 pm, followed by performances by Frisco Tony & The Beatniks and poetry reading by Antonio Pineda.

Phnom Penh Community College’s next sessions, on 24 August, comprise a double drawing workshop, covering still life in the morning and figure drawing in the afternoon, facilitated by artist France Damon. A new Khmer film makes its Cambodian premiere next week. Where I Go, by young filmmaker Neang Kavich, will screen at Legend Cinema on Monday 26 at 7.30 pm and Platinum Cineplex on Wednesday 28th at 6.30 pm.

DanceWorldCambodia’s new season of classes is now underway: the current offering includes lyrical contemporary, commercial jazz and pop, hip hop and breakdance. Classes are held at the Hotel Cambodiana Studio (via Physique Gym club reception). For more details contact dance@danceworldcambodia.com
