Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 13 May, 2014

 

Greetings all.Tonight, Tuesday 13, from 6 pm, the opening at Meta House of Cages torn open, new sculptures and paintings by Chhan Dina. “We are reminded of what we share with other living beings, and what we forget and deny. The paintings explode with colour, a confident assertion of the shared liberation theme. In paint, line and colour blur the distinctions between species, all swimming in the same soup; in fired clay, disparate characteristics are fused into one body.” Absolutely not to be missed.

Different but the same, the Cambodia LGBT Pride Week 2014 Film Festival opens Tuesday 13, running through to Saturday 18 at Meta House. Official opening at 7 pm with the screening of a documentary about the 2013 Pride Week, and a collection of shorts from around the world. The week unfolds with screenings every day from 4 pm.

From the press release: “Partially submerged people in vast landscapes sit alongside nuclear explosions and contemplative figures in this series. Applying sawdust, mud and acrylic paint on raw canvas, directly with his hands, the artist Chea Sereyroth depicts natural and manmade disasters. In these large-scale paintings he creates highly charged emotional and surreal terrains.” From 6.30 pm, and running to June 15.

On Saturday 10, between 2 pm and 6 pm, Romeet Gallery is presenting a talk and two free workshops. SEA ArtsFest producer and curator Annie Jael Kwan will speak on the topic: SEA ArtsFest, WHAT REMAINS and live audio-visual art projects : An Introduction and overview. WHAT REMAINS is “a cross-cultural multidisciplinary collaboration combining experimental audio-visual work with traditional Cambodian art forms, to explore survival and the arts in post-revolutionary Cambodia.” The two workshops will follow, led by audiovisual artists and filmmakers Jai Raffterty and Thomas Buttery.

Greetings all.Looks like a busy Wednesday, and a quiet weekend.From Wednesday 30 at 6 pm, Cambodian Living Arts presents the exhibition Chhnang! about traditional and contemporary pottery making. The opening includes a dance performance about chhnangs at 6:40pm, and Q&As with representatives from the different projects featured in the exhibition.

Even more infoAlso on Wednesday 30, Java Café and Gallery hosts their regular monthly poetry night inviting all styles of writing and literary arts to take part. From 6 pm to 7 pm there is a “meet-up” for sharing and discussion on writing projects or other activities the individuals are involved in. At 7 pm, this month’s featured reader is Melbourne based Carly Nugent. At 8 pm the stage is open for all comers.

Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 11 March, 2014

A late start to the Kumnooh week on Friday 14 at 9.30 pm at Meta House, with a most intriguing sounding electronic music event featuring Berlin-based C-DRIK aka Kirdec, inspired by alternative and experimental music from Africa and Asia. The performance mixes field recordings with electronic sounds and drones in what C-DRIK calls “Cinema for the Ears”.
