There is much to celebrate in the arts in Cambodia, and this week particular mention must go to the efforts to put on the inaugural Kampot Writers and Readers Festival over the weekend. The momentum generated by this literary event is already being felt for writers of all stripes, and we look forward to the next. Commencing on Thursday 12, the 12^th International Music Festival Phnom Penh presents a series of concerts at the InterContinental Hotel and Meta House. The theme this year is The European Dream of Progress and Enlightenment, the period of 1700 to 1900, and works of the heavyweights such as Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Liszt feature alongside lesser known composers, performed by ensembles and soloists from the region and beyond. Phnom Penh resident, ambient music composer and WASH collaboration member Warren Daly’s new EP, The Stones Are Awake, is now available from Bandcamp, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Spotify and other digital stores. The work includes excerpts from longer compositions written for the multi-faceted live performance The Stones Are Awake performed at Meta House in July and August of this year, and features text by Scott Bywater read by Bernadette Vincent.   A video clip is now available too.

The Governor’s House Boutique Hotel, (near the corner of Mao Tse Toung Bvd and Norodom – the external wall of the hotel bears the inscription Iguazu), presents a double photographic exhibition by Vincent de Wilde. The first, Between Salt and Earth (Entre Sel et Terre), looks at labours in the Kampot salt fields; the second, Supervivere: Cambodia Today“) is made up of over sixty black and white photographs covering various aspects of the life in Cambodia, and is permanently displayed in the staircases and hotel bedrooms. An opening is planned for November.

Dana Langlois of Java Arts and entrepreneur Alexis de Suremain are planning to convert an old boat currently docked on the Tonle Sap into a cultural icon for the city. Throughout October and November, the French Institute of Cambodia is running Vivre Ensemble (Living Together: City, Architecture and Housing), a series of events that will include conferences and film screenings and other happenings. The action starts tonight, Tuesday 6, at 6.30 pm, with the 2015 Architecture contest awards ceremony, with the exhibition of models created by students from six architecture schools in Cambodia on the topic The Immeuble-villa. On Thursday 8 at 6.30 pm architects Kang Hok, Ivan Tizianel and Yvon Chalm will discuss the history of the immeuble-villa concept, developed by Le Corbusier in the 1920s. Friday 9 from 5 pm, you can enjoy a double feature: Jacques Tati’s films Mon Oncle and Playtime. Finally for this week, on Saturday 10 at 10 am the screening of a documentary, Le Siecle de Le Corbusier, examining the architect’s life and work.
