Drop Cloth … a few things you might not know about

Sam Thomas – stand-up comedian, actor and now puppeteer in Scylla and Glaucus, the second production by the newly formed Lo-Key Theatre Company, playing this weekend at SpeakEasy Theatre. 

An aspect of the arts that you think is overrated:
In comedy, doing jokes for shock value, just to get a reaction.  

An aspect of the arts that you think is underrated:
Live comedy.  You can’t get the same experience from watching a Netflix special that you can from actually attending a live comedy event.  I never went to a comedy show until I started doing comedy myself – I never wanted to give amateur comedy a chance until I was an amateur comedian, I thought you had to be a household name before you could be depended upon to make people laugh, that if you are not famous then you are not funny. 
Also puppetry is underrated, especially puppet theatre for adults.  It’s really a remarkable artform, and it’s amazing how effective a medium it is.  I’m a novice but interestingly I don’t get stage fright the way I do in drama or comedy.  

An early puppetry memory
Puppets used to serve as a cool icebreaker.  When I was a little boy and my parents would have friends over with a kid, usually younger than me, and shy in the presence of me and my two brothers,  I would think I know how to put this child at ease and I’d get a puppet, and start talking to them with it.  Then my younger brother would grab the puppet by the neck and start punching it in the face, and the visiting child would join in, and that was how they came out of their shell. 

The last thing you had to eat
Curry udon from a Japanese restaurant.  I won’t say their name until I get a sponsorship deal sorted.  I’m reading a Japanese murder mystery, and I thought wouldn’t it be fun to eat Japanese food while I read this Japanese book; I’ll know how they eat and how they kill each other.  Important things to learn about any new culture.  I have a friend who learns the local martial art when he visits a new country – I suggested to him it would be better to learn the language so you could understand why they were attacking you. 

How did you get your start?
I started doing comedy at university after friends told me I ought to – my response was: whatever.  Then one day I was on the bus with my rugby team and I said something funny, they said you should do comedy, and I said okay, I’ll do it, if you say so.  It felt like my comrades were sending me on a mission – I won’t let you down because we’re rugby brothers, we wear the same shirt and we tackle people together and that’s a sacred bond.  And so I did.  I told them about it at practice, I didn’t actually expect them to come.   It’s really easy to get started in comedy, because once you actually take the plunge and get on stage, tell the audience that it’s your first time, and everyone will cut you so much slack.  Oh bless his heart, he must be terrified, he’s just like one of us.  But you only get that on your first show.  The second time it’s more like – he’s probably pretty good by now, let’s see what he’s got. 

When did you first come to / first leave Cambodia?
2012, and I’ve been here ever since.  I straight up emigrated here.   My brother got here first, and then he sent for me from the old country, he said the streets of Cambodia are paved with English teaching jobs.  I sometimes envy people who have a more romantic story – I was backpacking around South East Asia and I fell in love with the place…  but alas. 

A book or movie you keep going back to
Amelie.  And Galaxy Quest – I’m not even a Star Trek fan.  I’m not not-a-fan, but I’m not a fan either.   So we have one pretentious one and one honest one.   
The third Harry Potter book, I could read that any number of times, before the series went really dark.  I’ve also been returning to a series of mysteries I read as a child – Sammy Keyes books by Wendelin Van Draanen.  It was cool how she could make a compelling mystery without it being lurid or horrible.  And Infinite Jest, we’ll say that so people will know I have a very high reading level. 

What languages do you speak?
English, French and Khmer.  I’ve been trying to learn Welsh, because for a long time my mom was saying that our family is Welsh.  Recently she mentioned that my great grandmother is fully Swedish, and now there are plans to visit Sweden, and so I’ve started learning to speak Swedish as well. 

A country that you would like to visit:
I would like to visit Sweden and Wales – maybe it would make me feel like I have a bit more of a backstory than just your generic white American boy.  I would like to visit France – I’ve never been. 

Something people might be surprised to know about you:
I can’t think of anything.  I’ve told the joke before that people don’t gossip about me because every time something happens to me I turn it into comedy as fast as I can. 

A question from last week’s participant: who is your favourite movie star?
Sam Rockwell.  He’s in Galaxy Quest, he’s in a lot of other stuff.  I haven’t seen a movie of his that I don’t like, I think he picks good roles, and he’s a really good actor.

However, we believe that this is not a healthy approach to dealing with internal issues, and with this exhibition, we’ve decided to take a bold approach to express ourselves despite the stigma in the hopes of ending discrimination and encouraging empathy and understanding for one another.”  Panel discussions, live music and short films over two days.

Living in the land of magic – Marika Els and her puppets

Coming next month to Speakeasy Theatre is an experimental non-verbal puppetry performance, Scylla and Glaucus, the second production by the newly formed Lo-Key Theatre Company,.  Kumnooh was curious and went to talk to director, artist and puppeteer Marika Els.

“I’ve been wanting to do this for 15 years,” she says.  “The first attempt was in 2008 as part of my Master’s degree, but I got really ill and had to cancel.   When Rob Appleby, Paul Glew and I started Lo-Key Theatre Company they asked what show I would like to do first.  I said I know exactly – it’s written, it’s done, I have everything, I just need to build the set and the puppets.  It’s finally happening.”

At the end of July 2023, dance company Prumsodun Ok & NATYARASA will host two nights of performances featuring original choreography from Chakra, Chamreoun, Chay, Sopharoth, and Venghour. They have launched a crowdsourcing campaign to support the project.  Support their fundraising campaign here.    

The 6^th annual Khmer Literature Festival is coming soon – watch this space, and this one too.  The literary competition is now open for submissions (until 30 September) – the theme is Colourful Voices.

For its next project, La Troupe de Théâtre Francophone de Phnom Penh is looking for two male actors, ideally aged 25 – 40 for one and 50 – 65 for the other.  A demanding schedule of 20 rehearsals between late November and January with performances 18, 19 and 20 January 2024.

At the end of July 2023, dance company Prumsodun Ok & NATYARASA will host two nights of performances featuring original choreography from Chakra, Chamreoun, Chay, Sopharoth, and Venghour.
