Every October, artists all over the world take on the Inktober drawing challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month. Neverland Artspace will be hosting events for Inktober in Phnom Penh, including weekly Drink and Draw, weekly Sketch Circle, and an exhibition that will open November 1. There is an open call for submissions for the exhibition – closing date 31 October. Check it all out at Inktober Cambodia.

Tonight, Tuesday 17, at Meta House from 6 pm, a photographic exhibition, Pailin 1974, from Colin Grafton’s travels in Cambodia in the early 1970s. “In 1974, when he was living in Phnom Penh, he made a brief helicopter trip to the little town of Pailin near the Thai border. He was astonished to find hundreds of people searching for gems. It was a far cry from the war zone. He only had one film for his camera, but managed to capture some of the excitement and drama in these black-and-white photographs.”

Wednesday 18, at For Arts’ Sake in Siem Reap, Elders of Kulen, photographs by Tram Lyrattanak, an exhibition of portraits and stories of Cambodian elders. “Deep in the forest beyond the waterfall, villages have long existed on the sacred mountains of Kulen. Their elders are the keepers of cultural heritage, traditional medicinal knowledge, and survivors of a long and difficult history.” 6 pm – 8 pm.

Java Independence hosts Invisible Conversations, installation and images by Kong Vollak. “As an artist and a teacher, Vollak’s artistic impulse often coincides with an educational tendency. […] Through a collaborative project Jorng Jam (2014 – 2015) Vollak took the opportunity to interview his own family, collect their stories and to develop a deeper understanding of their experiences through his artistic work.
