At Java Independence, painter Oeur Sokuntevy’s triumphant return to Phnom Penh with the exhibition Upside Down, new paintings produced since moving to Berlin. “Unlike her previous work, this series has more similarities to documentation than storytelling. There is a distance from the subjects that has allowed Sokuntevy, with her observant-eye, to define moments through colour and movement – an intuitive narrative that is felt rather than known.”

At the French Institute, Kbach Roam (Dance Pattern), an exhibition of historic photographs documenting the postures and poses of the Cambodian Royal Ballet, by George Groslier, long time director of the National Museum of Phnom Penh. The glass negatives dating from 1917 have recently been restored and digitised. Runs until September 7.

The Traditional Dance Show, presented by Cambodian Living Arts, takes place at the National Museum stage. The hour-long performance showcases classical and folk dances from across Cambodia, including the famous Apsara.
