Bophana Center hosts a photographic exhibition by Jessica Austin, Fulbright Scholar 2016/17, and the Roung Kon Project: Spectral Memories of the Screen: the After-Life of Cambodia’s Heritage Cinemas. “Photos taken inside old cinemas in Kampong Cham, Battambang, Kampot, and Kratie invite the viewer to enter these public spaces that have had many lives and now exist between memory and obliteration.” The reception on Friday 14 from 6.30 pm will include a presentation by Jessica Austin.

At Meta House, an exhibition by Berlin-based painter Ernst Altmann, Evergreen Apparel, a new series of drawings and gouaches reflecting on Cambodian garment workers and the social imbalances he witnesses. “Can one paint Cambodian female factory workers in their grace and dignity when their living conditions are so tough that the only reasonable reaction would be anger? How can we show our solidarity?”

At Java Independence, painter Oeur Sokuntevy’s triumphant return to Phnom Penh with the exhibition Upside Down, new paintings produced since moving to Berlin. “Unlike her previous work, this series has more similarities to documentation than storytelling. There is a distance from the subjects that has allowed Sokuntevy, with her observant-eye, to define moments through colour and movement – an intuitive narrative that is felt rather than known.”
