Tonight, Tuesday 15, Meta House presents a double event. Downstairs, From Ruin To Riches Cambodia’s Economy (1975 – 2015) is a multi-media collaborative exhibition by students from eight Phnom Penh universities, photographers, artists and filmmakers looking at the rapid pace of development in Cambodia over the last 40 years. At the same time upstairs, the opening of a painting exhibition by Chheang Rena, The Standing Subble, a collection of six architectural paintings, “to explore the richness of Cambodia’s civilization before it collapsed.” Both events kick off at 6 pm.

Also on Tuesday 15, at 6.30 pm at the French Institute presents a discussion with graphic novelist Tian, Rebuilding History from words to drawings, as part of his exhibition L’année du lièvre. The making of a graphic novel, which traces the artistic journey of the work, on the occasion of the release of the third volume in the trilogy. A French language event, with interpretation into Khmer and English.

Thursday 17 at 7 pm, Meta House hosts an evening with Steven Johnson, currently a lecturer at Pannasastra University, author of the self-published Unknown Wars of Asia, Africa and the Americas That Changed History. Johnson will focus on Asian wars, including the Vietnamese War of Independence against China which lasted 1049 years, the wars of the Khmer Empire (802 – 1431) and the unlikely hero that emerged in a time of crisis in 1177, King Jayavarman VII.

Friday 18 and Saturday 19 at 7 pm at the Department of Performing Arts, Amrita Performing Arts presents Brodal Serei, a new work in progress exploring a Khmer boxer’s life beyond the ring, an original contemporary dance project that is the result of two years of collaboration between Amrita artists and renowned French-Cambodian choreographer, Emmanuèle Phuon and Malaysian dramaturge Lim How Ngean.
