Down in Kampot tonight, Tuesday 14, the Lightbox collaborative art space is launching its rooftop cinema with a screening of Davy Chou’s film Golden Slumbers, about Golden Age Cambodian cinema.

Greetings all,

Wednesday 8 sees the launch of the Acts of Memory: Learn the past; Create the future, a programme jointly developed by Bophana Center and Cambodian Living Arts to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1975 fall of Phnom Penh. Activities will commence at 5 pm with a prayer ceremony and smot singing, followed by an official opening with Rithy Panh, CLA Executive Director Phloeun Prim and artist Leang Seckon, and then a lecture by Father François Ponchaud, author of Cambodia: Year Zero. This is Khmer language event. An exhibition, Transmissions 2015, will also be open to the public until the end of May. The Acts of Memory programme will continue throughout the year.

Also on Wednesday 8, Java Café’s monthly Open Stage poetry night features poet and songwriter Scott Bywater, recently returned from France, and comedians Scotty Muldoon, Sam Thomas and Aidan Killian. On Saturday 11 from 2 pm, Develop Boeng Kak Art are opening the doors at Art Collective House at the Boeng Kak Lake. This is an initiative to create a diversified music and arts space – and the afternoon event will provide an opportunity to share the vision, to begin to gather resources and equipment, and get interested people involved.

Tickets are now available for the upcoming Phnom Penh Players production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at The Mansion. Tickets will be strictly limited to 100 seats for each of the four shows, 24/25 April and 1/2 May. It promises to be quite a special event.

Opening today, Tuesday 31 – but without an official reception, it appears – at theSofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, is Wonders of 1929, a collection of vintage photographs of Cambodia, the work of Georges Portal, a French actor and director. Looks like quite something for those of us that love those tantalisingly few old black and white photographs of Phnom Penh… and you have four months to find the time to get there.

Beginning a quiet week, on Wednesday 25 MetaHouse hosts a Monument Books launch of The Factors Contributing to Cambodia’s Civil War, 1950s – 1980s/Lessons Then and Now by journalist Ek Madra, a book tracing “Cambodia’s long, difficult search for peace, security, and identity.” The author will be present, and hold a Q&A session. 7 pm start.

On Friday 27, 6 pm at Bophana Center, an artist’s talk by photographer Mak Remissa, about his exhibition Leave for 3 Days, which was a part of the PhotoPhnomPenh festival in February. The work deals with the forced evacuation of Phnom Penh in 1975, which he witnessed as a young child. A Khmer language event.

The show comprises a selection of photographs examining the experience of Jews in Asia, focusing on Bombay, Calcutta and Phnom Penh.

At Bophana Center tonight, Tuesday 24 at 6 pm, a lecture entitled Audiovisual Preservation and the Challenges of Digital Age to be given by Dr Dietrich Schüller, a cultural anthropologist and ethnomusicologist, and consultant to the Austrian Academy of Sciences and UNESCO, on the efforts to preserve cultural artefacts in a digital setting. The lecture is in English, and will be followed by a Q&A session.

All this week at Meta House, a presentation of an international documentary competition, the Los Angeles based SIM (Social Impact Media) Awards, which aims to support and promote independent film and humanitarian communities in global awareness, social justice, human rights and humanitarian development. The selection includes films from all over the world, with a wide variety of subject matter. First screenings Tuesday 24 from 7 pm, then every day through to Sunday 1 at 4 pm and 7 pm. On Wednesday 11 Java Café’s monthly Open Stage features novelist and singer/songwriter Ma Chanpanha, screenwriter Stephen Row and poet and singer-songwriter Tim Hall. As usual, the evening commences at 6 pm with a writers’ meet-up, with main acts at 7 pm to be followed by a open mic session to close. Up in Siem Reap this weekend, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15, the Sok San Festival is an epic conglomeration of workshops and performances featuring everything from hula hoops and skateboards to African drumming and kite flying.  Two days of exuberance.

Also out of town, a new fundraising project has been launched for the Kampot Arts and Music Association, a new effort by Julien Poulson of the Cambodian Space Project to build a performing arts centre in Kampot. You can find out more and contribute here and get details in preparation for the opening party here.

A new website has been launched for Phnom Penh resident Frederikke Tu, a professional artist from Denmark. Frederikke works full time creating artwork, including oil, acrylic, watercolor paintings, photography, animation and digital media.
