Kumnooh: arts guide for Cambodia, week commencing 28 August 2018

Greetings,

On Saturday 1, the opening at Space Four Zero/Wang Dang Doodle (St 240 ½) of an exhibition of woodcuts led by Khun Gechsoun aka Soon Cambodian Women’s Woodcut Series. “Soon’s art depicts scenes of Kampot life – women workers in fishing and farming communities, as well as curious and often comical views of daily life in and around Cambodia’s tranquil but fast-developing coastal province. Soon employs and teaches local women arts and crafts skills and will bring together their works, alongside her own striking images, in a unique women’s perspective on work and life for women of the province.” From 6 pm.

Also on Saturday 1, from 6.30 pm at Java Creative Café, Tuol Kork, a solo exhibition by Sin Many, Sign, as part of the Creative Generation series for 2018.  “Many is a self-taught artist whose work is concerned with the well-being of humanity and the inter-relationships with others and its surroundings. Inspired by the simple line drawings of American artist Keith Haring, Many works with lines and geometric shapes as a starting point for his artworks. His practices include photography, sculpture and screen printing.”  The exhibition will include a public program of a walkthrough with the artist and artist talk on Saturday 22.   Runs until October 7.

Sunday 2 at 4 pm, a special event at the National Museum performance space, marking the 15th anniversary of dance troupe SilverBell. Tickets $1 – note limited seating is available – available at Java Café locations, Cambodian Living Arts and the French Institute. This is followed on Monday 3, 6.30 pm, by an artist talk with the dancers of SilverBell at Counterspace Theatre, Java Café Tuol Pompoung.

But while looking for wholeness in strength we often forget the beauty of imperfection. By searching within ourselves and what we see, we allow these imperfections to come forward, and connect on a visual – and metaphorical – level. Softening our gaze, we see the chinks in the armour. When we realise these chinks, as well as strengths, are an inimitable part of us, we can appreciate their complimentary value. Imperfections make us.”

On Friday 27 at Sa Sa Art Projects a talk by UuDam Tran Nguyen, a Vietnamese born artist whose work with a combination of video, performance, photography, sculpture, technology and new media, “transforms the boundaries between urban myth and popular legend to both celebrate and warn the role and impact of human progress.” He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2001, received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York City in 2005, and has exhibited widely throughout Asia, the US and Europe.   6 pm start.

On Saturday 30, from 5 pm, at Sa Sa Art Projects, Body of Sorrow a performance by Khun Vannak, Khiev Kanel, Ly Tong Yean, Mok Sombo and Sao Sreymao as part of the current exhibition Stride by Khun Vannak.  “By showing the differences of gestures, perception – describing the pain of the body, the soul and in the society as for human being. It’s explaining the suffering of people by people we loved, people around us, without sympathy for the animals, there are less hope in searching for condolence for the safe and wisdom for humans.” The performance takes place between 6pm and 7pm, with cocktails until late.

The artist has playfully staged them as characters throughout the exhibition space in both conventional and surprising ways – they hang, drape and dangle at different levels from the ceiling and walls, and rest on or slightly off open-ended pedestals.”

The hour-long performance showcases classical and folk dances from across Cambodia, including the famous Apsara.
