Opening on Saturday 25 at Villa Gallery at Maloop is Colonial Buildings, an exhibition of paintings by Roeun Sokhom. “The artist’s work not only captures the physical structures but also provides a narrative of the evolving urban landscape and the intersection of history and contemporary life. The incorporation of colonial architecture into the modern cityscape reflects the enduring legacy of the past and its integration with the present, creating a rich tapestry of cultural heritage.”

Also Saturday 25 from 6 pm is the opening of a new art exhibition by Erick Gonzalez, at his studio Le Artelier d’Erick Gonzalez. “This exhibition aims to remind us of the duality of things. The works presented are an allusion to that other, less visible reality. To that reality that sometimes lets itself be glimpsed like a small miracle or a bolt of lightning, in a diffuse and furtive way.” The exhibition will be open Thursday – Sunday from 4 pm to 7 pm.

Coming next month to Java Café Tuol Tom Pong are a number of performances of Season of Migration, a Cambodian dance drama created by the Sophiline Arts Ensemble. “Imagine that heavenly spirits have come to earth to live among humans and how they are shocked and transformed by the experience. Created by choreographer Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, Seasons of Migration explores the expressive boundaries of Cambodia’s exquisite classical dance, rendering contemporary ideas timeless and the ancient utterly modern.” 7 and 8 June at 7 pm; 9 June at 4 pm. Retrouver la danse, un dialogue entre archives photographiques et peintures (Rediscovering dance, a dialogue between photographic archives and paintings), an exhibition by Romain Bernini. “During his residency at the French Institute of Cambodia and the Ecole Française d’Extrême Orient, Bernini has explored the concept of a fragmented body, revealed by archaeologists, to draw a parallel with the history of dance and Cambodia, particularly during the Khmer Rouge period when life vanished both for men and their creations. However, dance, in its ephemeral beauty, continues to shine, it resists, more imperishable than stone, it reappears with a resilience that defies time.” Until 26 June.

Khmer Architecture Tours conducts Sunday architecture tours in Phnom Penh to promote the understanding of modern architecture in Cambodia, focusing on buildings erected after independence in 1953, described as ‘New Khmer Architecture’, while setting these in the historical context of Phnom Penh. Here is the schedule for February – May.
