Kumnooh: Cambodia arts for week commencing 12 September 2023

Opening tomorrow, Wednesday 13, at Sa Sa Art Projects is Rays of time, an exhibition by Kong Siden.  “Through digital technology, the artist compresses and transforms his photographs and video records of changing urbanscapes and landscapes of Cambodia into collages of illuminated colors and textures. A sense of micro and macro universe collides as the images continuously mutate like moving paintings.” From 6 pm.  Runs until 30 November.

Next Tuesday, September 19 at Meta House, the opening of Keep The Vibe Alive, an exhibition of paintings by David Richards, a prolific watercolor artist and muralist painter from the USA, who has lived in SE Asia for about 20 years.  The exhibition documents Phnom Penh’s expat music scene, showcasing popular musicians and venues.  The evening will include performances by Major/Minor and Green Leaf Motif

At Meta House on September 24 is (Visions) On the Future, by Metaestetica Lab.  “Metaestetica Lab @ museum represents an attempt to create the only contemporary art museum in Phnom Penh … self-proclaimed and managed by Carlo Santoro.”  Artists on display will include Suos Sodavy, Chhim Sothy, Tor Vutha, Khun Vannak, Vuth Lyno, Lim Sokchanlina and Robit Pen.

Sra’Art
The Rise, an exhibition of works by Cambodian painter Theanly Chov.  “Theanly’s paintings explore themes of individualism and societal progress in post-war Cambodia, with his subjects often depicted in a characteristic pose. His paintings capture the struggle and difficulty of realizing oneself in a society driven by opportunity and upward mobility. Despite these themes, his artwork is imbued with optimism and harmony.”

Khmer Architecture Tours conducts Sunday architecture tours in Phnom Penh to promote the understanding of modern architecture in Cambodia, focusing on buildings erected after independence in 1953, described as ‘New Khmer Architecture’, while setting these in the historical context of Phnom Penh.  Here is the schedule for May.  [Note: waiting for update]

First Sunday of the month at 6 pm at Noisy Chilli Taphouse, Comedy in Cambodia presents Sunday Comedown open mic. 


Kumnooh was originally established in May 2013 as a sister publication to LengPleng.com, the online music magazine for Cambodia, to provide basically a gig guide for the wider arts, covering art galleries, literature, dance, cinema, photography and now comedy.
